Unlike typical office seating, lab chairs and stools are specially designed seating solutions. For safety, hygiene, or ergonomic reasons, choosing the wrong chair for your lab after installation can lead to serious, time-consuming, and expensive issues to rectify. It is imperative to take the proper precautions to ensure that a chair is the right size and material, and meets the proper ESD specifications.

There are a multitude of factors that go into determining what kind of seating will be provided in a lab. Examples include determining the height the seating will be designed for, if the seating will be designed with ESD specifications in mind, if the seating will have a back or be a backless stool, will the seating design have armrests, does the seating design will support hygiene and can the seating design support a clinical or dental configuration.

The models in this group extend the gas lift height range to accommodate elevated work surfaces, and all include a foot ring that provides a stable rest for the feet when seated at height.

For any project involving tall-bench configurations, this category is the correct specification. Do not attempt to substitute a standard-height chair or stool where the bench height falls outside the standard adjustment range.

How to Choose the Right Lab Chair or Stool

Six decisions determine which Glorylab chair or stool is the correct specification for a given installation. Work through them in order.

1. Bench height

Confirm whether the installation involves a standard-height laboratory bench or an elevated tall-bench configuration. Standard-height chairs and stools (JH-LS038, JH-LS036 chair, JH-LS035, JH-LS029, JH-LS037, JH-LS015, JH-LS001, JH-LS021, JH-LS019, JH-LS034) are suited to conventional desk-height benching. Tall-bench chairs and stools (JH-LS031, JH-LS014, JH-LS017, JH-LS008, JH-LS006, JH-LS004) are required for elevated bench, standing-height, or instrumentation platform configurations. Specifying a standard-height model for a tall bench — or vice versa — results in a seating height that cannot be adjusted to the correct working position.

2. ESD and anti-static requirements

If the environment requires anti-static protection — electronics assembly, pharmaceutical production, cleanroom work, or any application with documented ESD risk — specify a model with conductive seating materials (surface resistance 10³–10⁹ ohms). All ESD models in the Glorylab range are identified as such in the product entries above. Standard PU foam chairs without ESD specification, stainless steel chairs and stools, clinical dental chairs, and school lab stools do not carry ESD certification and should not be specified where anti-static compliance is a requirement.

3. Back support versus backless

Full-back chairs (JH-LS038, JH-LS036 chair, JH-LS035, JH-LS029, JH-LS031, JH-LS014, JH-LS017, JH-LS037) are the appropriate specification for personnel spending extended periods seated at a fixed position. Short-back stools (JH-LS021) provide minimal lumbar contact for users who want a degree of back support without a full chair profile. Backless stools (JH-LS001, JH-LS019, JH-LS008, JH-LS006, JH-LS004, JH-LS034, and the school lab stool) are appropriate where users move frequently between positions or where a compact seating footprint is a priority.

4. Armrests

Armrests are included as standard on JH-LS038 and JH-LS031. All other models are armrest-free in standard configuration. If armrests are required on a model not listed with them as standard, confirm availability with Glorylab's technical team at the time of inquiry.

5. Hygiene and cleanability priority

For environments where hygiene and disinfection compatibility are the primary drivers — clinical, pharmaceutical, food science, or washdown environments — specify 304 stainless steel (JH-LS036 chair, JH-LS034 stool) or PU leather (JH-LS029, JH-LS004) rather than PU foam. PU foam provides adequate cleanability for general laboratory use but is not appropriate where regular disinfection with clinical-grade agents is required across the full seat surface.

6. Clinical or dental use

For dental operatories and clinical examination or procedure environments, the JH-LS037 clinical dental chair is the dedicated specification. A standard laboratory ESD chair is not an appropriate substitute in a clinical seating application — the seat geometry, backrest angle, and surface material of the JH-LS037 are configured specifically for clinical procedure positioning.

Start with how your team works. Choose a chair when personnel stay seated at one position for extended periods and need back support — a full backrest, and in some cases armrests, reduces fatigue during long bench sessions. Choose a stool when users move frequently between positions, need unobstructed bench access from multiple angles, or work in compact layouts where a chair back would create clearance issues.

  • Chair: long, static seated work; back and arm support required
  • Stool: high-mobility work; backless or short-back; smaller footprint

If you need light back support without a full chair profile, a short-back stool like the JH-LS021 bridges the two.

It comes down to your bench height. Standard-height models are built for conventional desk-range benches. Tall-bench models (JH-LS031, JH-LS014, JH-LS017, JH-LS008, JH-LS006, JH-LS004) use an extended gas lift range for elevated benches, standing-height counters, and instrumentation platforms, and all include a foot ring for support at height.

Do not substitute a standard-height chair on a tall bench — the seat cannot be raised to the correct working position. Confirm your bench height at the time of inquiry and our team will match the right range.

Specify ESD seating whenever electrostatic discharge is a documented risk — electronics and semiconductor assembly, pharmaceutical processes, and cleanroom work. Glorylab’s ESD models use conductive seat materials with a surface resistance of 10³–10⁹ ohms, meaning the seat dissipates static in a controlled way rather than allowing a sudden discharge that could damage components.

The anti-static property is built into the seat material, not applied as a coating. Note that conductive casters or foot cups are required to keep the full system within the ESD range. Non-ESD models (stainless steel, clinical, school) should not be specified where anti-static compliance is required.

Match the material to your primary requirement:

  • PU foam: general-purpose ESD seating; comfortable and cost-effective for standard bench work (e.g., JH-LS035, JH-LS001).
  • PU leather: improved chemical resistance and an easier-clean surface for environments with incidental reagent exposure (e.g., JH-LS029, JH-LS004).
  • 304 stainless steel: hygiene-critical environments subject to disinfection and washdown, where no absorbent materials are allowed (e.g., JH-LS036 chair, JH-LS034 stool).

If hygiene and repeated disinfection are the deciding factors, choose stainless steel. If chemical splashes are the concern, PU leather is the practical middle ground.

The foot ring gives your feet a stable resting point when they can’t reach the floor. On a tall-bench chair or stool, the seat sits well above standard height, so unsupported legs cause fatigue and poor circulation over a full shift. The ring solves that.

It is standard on all Glorylab tall-bench models (JH-LS031, JH-LS014, JH-LS017, JH-LS008, JH-LS006, JH-LS004). On standard-height seating it is not usually needed, though it can be added on request. If you’re specifying seating for an elevated bench, treat the foot ring as essential, not optional.

Decide based on whether users need to move and on your floor type. Choose casters when staff reposition frequently around the bench or between stations. Choose foot cups when you want the seat to stay put — common in cleanroom and controlled environments, where the JH-LS019 ships with foot cups as standard to limit particulate movement across the floor.

Keep in mind that in ESD applications, conductive casters or conductive foot cups are required to maintain the full anti-static path. Let us know your flooring and workflow at the time of inquiry and we’ll configure the base accordingly.

They’re built for different environments and are not interchangeable with standard ESD lab seating.

  • Clinical/dental (JH-LS037): a PU chair with procedure-appropriate seat geometry and a surface compatible with clinical-grade disinfectants. It is specified for dental operatories and clinical rooms, not anti-static work.
  • School lab stools: fixed-height PP (polypropylene) stools built for teaching labs — chemically resistant, easy to clean, and low-maintenance with no adjustable mechanism.

Neither carries an ESD rating in standard configuration. Where anti-static compliance is required, specify a dedicated ESD model instead.
